An innovative health food brand, focused on women’s health aspired to create Women’s first unique solutions for healthy living. They wanted to launch a 100% healthy fruit juice for their customers. Fruit juices are rich nutritional means both for humans and microbes. This translates to the usage of strong preservatives for required shelf life, much against the philosophy of brand and approach of Arjuna Natural for a 100% natural solution.
As a part of the research, Arjuna‘s scientific research team worked closely with the client’s team. Fruit juice samples were examined to understand spoilage factors. In this case, the microbes identified were Acetic acid bacteria, Yeast, and Rhizopus sp. They were looking for an extended shelf life of at least 6 months.
As a second stage, Arjuna Naturals dwelt into our experience pool to find possible solutions to combat microbes without effecting the texture, taste, smell, or color of the original fruit juice. By careful selection and experimentation, a potential winner consisted of various natural extracts that were identified and formulated. Extenfo for fruit juice (AXFC 105) was presented to the client for analysis and approval.
The Brand conducted an accelerated shelf-life study by applying new natural preservatives in their product. The product exceeded expectations at an applied dosage was 750 PPM (0.075%) by giving a shelf life of 9 months with no sensory fouling or sedimentation. This enabled them to make a label claim of ‘Natural Flavour’ citing it to be a 100% natural product.
The product was an instant success for the target group as the brand was able to successfully position itself as a healthy alternative highlighting the non-usage of synthetic preservatives.
