Arjuna rebranding its all-natural turmeric extract
Kerala, India-Arjuna Natural Ltd. announces it has established a direct supply chain in the US for its leading high-potency turmeric extract, Curcugreen™, ensuring safe, pure product. Curcugreen has the same, market-leading patented bio-available composition that was sold previously through an exclusive agreement with Dolcas Biotech under the brand name, "Curcugreen™ ". This composition experienced record growth levels compared to all other curcumin supplements.
"Our priority is to ensure our customers and consumers that our patented composition - the safety and therapeutic benefits of which have been validated by more than 50 scientific studies - will continue to be available without any change in the composition," explains P.J. Kunjachan, Chairman and Managing Director for Arjuna. "Arjuna Natural will market the same patented composition under its own trademark, Curcugreen."
Arjuna, the manufacturer and owner of 29 patents on product composition, process and application will no longer supply the clinically proven composition to Dolcas Biotech. The change to new brand name will not affect the composition and quality of this unique curcumin.
The growing importance of traceability, and maintaining complete control of the supply chain from farm-to-fork, and commitment to highest standards of quality encouraged Arjuna to move closer to serving customers globally. The Arjuna sales office in Dallas, Texas, will serve its North American customers and guarantee the highest level of service. Arjuna will exhibit Curcugreen alongside its portfolio of natural ingredients, natural colors, and natural preservatives, at the SSW Expo, in Las Vegas, November 8 and 9, booth 2378
The unique composition of Curcugreen comprises of curcuminoids and essential oil of turmeric which increases free-curcumin bioavailability and provides multifaceted health benefits. This composition has proven synergistic activity. This is a whole-food ingredient, clean, natural, and safe to use.
"Our flagship curcumin has been at the forefront of turmeric science for the past 15 years," says Benny Antony, PhD, Joint Managing Director for Arjuna. "It now has been rebranded as Curcugreen to reflect the spirit of a safe, high-bioavailability ingredient, backed with an eco-friendly approach through the use of solar energy and sustainable farming practices. Arjuna has taken full control of its supply chain."
"We will continue to invest in new science for Curcugreen to expand the use of this innovative curcumin in the bioavailable space," adds Antony.
"Our brand is consistently evolving - we are at the forefront of science and innovation not just for the sake of innovation but to create a difference in consumers' lifestyle," concluded Antony. Arjuna Natural's Curcugreen™ Curcumin Granted New Patent
-
Curcugreen™, a high-potency turmeric extract developed and manufactured by Arjuna Naturals Ltd., has been granted a patent for "composition for use in treatment" by the European Patent Office (EPO). This patent is in addition to 16 patents (13 in the US, two in Japan and one in Europe) that Arjuna already has on its Curcugreen™ turmeric extracts.
The new patent covers Arjuna's composition of the active curcuminoids, demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin, and Ar-turmerone. The essential oil of turmeric has proven effective in helping the treatment of depression, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and Alzheimer's disease. The patent is strictly enforced in most countries in EU and in the US.
Last year, Curcugreen™ was affirmed GRAS status by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This confirms the safety profile of Curcugreen™ and cements it as a trusted, clean brand. New study backs efficacy of Herbagut®, a polybotanical extract for gut health and overall well-being
-
Results of a new human study shows that Herbagut®, an all-natural polybotanical extract blend, supports gut health. For centuries, Ayurvedic botanical ingredients have been used traditionally for gut health and general well-being.
Herbagut®, a proprietary blend of 14 botanical extracts developed and marketed by Arjuna Natural Ltd., is rooted in the centuries-old tradition of Ayurvedic medicine. The company will exhibit Herbagut at Vitafoods, Geneva, May 15-17, booth Booth #J30.
The botanical ingredients used in Herbagut® are individually extracted and blended in proprietary ratio with unique fingerprinting to ensure stringent quality, efficacy, and consistency. Herbagut® is certified pure, sustainable, and traceable, and conforms to EU regulations including PAH. All of the 14 botanical extracts used in Herbagut® are approved in the EU and US for use in food supplements.
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study, published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine (March, 2018) by Adrian Lopresti, PhD, at Murdoch University, Perth, Australia, demonstrated that this synergistic polybotanical extract helps support overall well-being and healthy gut function. Discomfort in the gut has been linked to anxiety, stress, and depression (the so-called "gut-brain" axis). The synergistic action of ingredients in Herbagut® offers mucosal protection and helps maintain the integrity of internal lining of the gut. It also has a proven anti-inflammatory effect, helping to support a diverse gut microbiota and aiding in gut motility.
"This trial confirms that daily intake of 800 mg of Herbagut over a 28-day period can improve gut health and related health conditions in people with unsatisfactory bowel habits," says Benny Antony, PhD, Joint Managing Director for Arjuna. "The tradition of Ayurvedic medicine, used for hundreds of years, is finally backed by research and is accessible to consumers who seek natural relief from digestive stress."
The study further proved that Herbagut® is safe to use in food supplements, offering a range of specific benefits that include: improvement of gut microflora, regular bowel movements, constipation relief, and mitigation of abdominal pain, abdominal distension, heartburn, and straining at defecation. Through its support of a healthy gut-brain interaction, it significantly improves the overall quality of life. Other aspects of the study demonstrated that the phytochemicals in Herbagut® can selectively kill pathogenic bacteria.
"The patent-pending Herbagut® brand is now available in powder, granular, and taste-masked water-dispersible powder formats," adds Antony.

Arjuna Launches Highly Potent Ashwagandha
-
Kerala, India-Arjuna Natural Ltd., launches Shodenreg;, its high-potency, all-natural ashwagandha extract, at Vitafoods, Geneva, Booth #J30 2018.
Shoden® is the highly bioactive extract of ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), standardized to contain more than 35% glycowithanolides—the most active components of ashwagandha. This plant has been extensively used in India for centuries to reduce symptoms of anxiety and stress. Arjuna has invested in several ongoing clinical studies of Shoden® at top research institutes. Results of the first study will be published in a few months.
Innova Market Insights reports +18% average annual growth for new product launches featuring ashwagandha as an ingredient (Global, CAGR 2013-2017). In 2017, 59% of all new product launches tracked with ashwagandha as an ingredient are supplements, while 13% of all new product launches tracked with ashwagandha are soft drinks, compared to just 4% in 2013. In 2017, 49% of all new product launches reported with ashwagandha as an ingredient featured an energy claim.
Ashwagandha, also known as "Indian winter cherry" and "Indian ginseng," is one of the most important herbs used in traditional medicine in India, has been used in Ayurvedic and indigenous medicine for more than 3,000 years.
Ashwagandha extract contains alkaloids. Some of the alkaloids are toxic and it is technically challenging to remove them and keep the product safe to use. Arjuna developed a new, proprietary method of purification, based on traditional Indian processes, that targets and removes only toxic alkaloids, while retaining the beneficial bioactive ones. "Results following tests of Shoden® in multiple trials at Arjuna’s R&D lab proved the ability of this gentle process to ensure a pure, safe-to-use ashwagandha," says Benny Antony, PhD, Joint Managing Director for Arjuna. Activity of each product batch is guaranteed tested and confirmed by in vivo testing.
Patent protected Shoden has a high amount of glycowithanolides in comparison to other ashwagandha extracts in the market. "We identified specific locations/farms in India for the cultivation of ashwagandha under our supervision and harvested once the crop reaches optimal growth level that allow us to provide supplement manufacturers a consistent, potent ingredient," adds Antony. "Arjuna also maintains transparency and traceability from-farm to supplement to guarantee a stable, safe supply."
Arjuna's production processes and products meet market-specific regulations worldwide. A GMP-certified, SAP-driven company, Arjuna has achieved international certifications including ISO22000, Kosher and Halal. Arjuna continues to engage in research and development, with continuing scientific validation of its novel product line through advanced clinical studies.

Arjuna Confirms Origin-Cultivated Amaranth Supply
-
Arjuna Natural Ltd. is now able to guarantee a sustainable, nitrate-enriched, all-natural Amaranthus extract supply for boosting nitric oxide levels. The company implemented a sustainable approach to meet the growing demand for its nitric oxide booster, OxyStorm®, in the US and Europe
This natural source of nitrates is sugar-free and can be applied to a wide range of applications and standardized high nitrate content of 9%. Clinical research has demonstrated a crucial role played by nitric oxide in cardiovascular health. Nitric oxide deficiency, is the first step for the emergence of many disease states of the cardiovascular and related systems, including heart failure, hypertension, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, hyperhomocysteinemia, inflammation and diseases due to smoking.
Developing new methods to restore and replete bioactive nitric oxide is extremely important, especially for cardiprotection and support in persons who are active. Results from a clinical study published in the September 2016 European Journal of Applied Physiology confirm that dietary supplementation of OxyStorm generates a significant boost in plasma nitrate, ultimately increasing nitric oxide levels in the body.
To create its high-nitrate OxyStorm, Arjuna devoted large tracts of land in South India solely to amaranthus cultivation. Harvesting amaranth requires precise agriculture proficiency and care. The company’s established association with local farmers in turn supports the community and secures its income.
"Arjuna identified an experienced community of local farmers and helped them develop and maintain sustainable farming practices," says Benny Antony, PhD, Joint Managing Director. "We trained them to adopt the best practices, focusing on the minutest details, while employing advanced agricultural methods. This allows the farmers to attain the maximum yield of high-quality amaranthus, without using any chemicals."
The quality of amaranthus is significantly influenced by the climate as well. Arjuna guides the farmers to harvest amaranthus at the peak time, following which the crop undergoes a controlled, proprietary process before further extraction. The nutraceutical compounds are kept intact through every segment of the patent-pending manufacturing and purification process. All processing is performed at Arjuna’s dedicated facility, under complete supervision by Arjuna’s quality control department, and powered exclusively by eco-friendly solar energy.
"OxyStorm has gained a good reputation in the US and other countries for its health benefits and high nitrate content," notes Chase Johnston, Director of US Operations for Arjuna. "It is suitable for a comprehensive portfolio of food, beverage, and supplement applications, including health beverages, beverage 'shots', nutrition bars and supplements."
Arjuna Natural LLC, was recently established in Dallas, Texas, to better serve the company's North American customers.

Natural Preservatives Extend Frying Oil Shelf Life
-
Kerala, India—Arjuna Naturals Ltd., launches its natural preservative formulation for combating oxidation, thermal degradation, hydrolytic rancidity and extending the frying cycle of vegetable oils. The new, all-natural preservative formulation contains a few simple ingredients and enables a clean label. It is GMO-free, oil-soluble and vegan. Initial response was so strong, Arjuna decided to immediately market this natural solution worldwide.
FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) of India has revised its standards to allow for reuse of vegetable oil in frying and cooking applications until the oil reaches a maximum Total Polar Compound (TPC) limit of 25%. Any edible oil used for frying application that crosses this maximum limit of TPC will be considered unsafe. Arjuna's novel formulation also helps manufacturers use oil for frying more quantity by slowing down the oxidative degradation due to reuse, thus keeping the oil safe.
Frying oils contain sensitive mixtures of different unsaturated fatty acids that influence oxidative stability. Degradation of frying oil occurs quickly due to a higher temperature, oxidative degradation, and hydrolytic rancidity. These cause rapid deterioration that leads to unpleasant flavors and odors, and undesirable color changes in both the oil and in the food fried in it.
Food and foodservice companies typically evaluate Peroxide Value (PV), which measures oxidative degradation only and hydrolytic rancidity measured by Free Fatty Acids (FFA) both of which fluctuates during frying. This is the reason why TPC is considered an accurate indicator of the quality of frying oil.
"Our R&D team developed a natural preservative that can help maintain vegetable oil color, taste, and functionality even in high temperatures and does not negatively affect the fried product," explains Benny Antony, PhD, Joint Managing Director for Arjuna. "It helps food processors fry an increased number of product batches per liter of oil, with delayed TPC development and decreased time to rancidity. The new preservative formulation helps food manufacturers meet FSSAI's new standards and keep frying oil consumption economical."

Arjuna will triple Curcugreen™ production capacity
-
Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd. announces the completion of a new, state-of-the-art facility in Coimbatore, India, for making its Curcugreen™ branded turmeric extract. This will triple the curcumin capacity, maximizing efficiency and output, while sharply reducing waste. The curcumin market was valued at US$ 35.7 million in 2014, and is expected to reach US$ 84.3 million by 2022. This reflects expansion at a CAGR of 11.6% from 2015 to 2022, according to Research and Markets. Dietary supplements accounted for major share of global curcumin in the market. The beneficial properties of curcumin have led to high demand from the nutraceutical industry to manufacture dietary and herbal supplements.Arjuna broke ground on the new turmeric extract plant 10 months ago, and commercial production will begin in early June this year.
"Buyers of curcumin extracts have become acutely aware of possible contamination in turmeric extract formulations," says P.J Kunjachan , Chairman & Managing Director for Arjuna. "They prefer marketing trusted brands, such as Curcugreen™, that follow the strictest possible quality-centric measures and have gold standards in production. The new plant is [fully] automated and ready to meet the growing demand for this well-researched healthful ingredient."
Turmeric crops usually are ready for harvest after about 6 to 9 months of growth, depending on the variety. At maturity, the leaves turn yellow, fade, and wither. Maximum rhizome yield and dry rhizomes are obtained at this stage. At harvest, the leaves and stems are cut close to the ground to maximize the removal of vegetative material. Because each rhizome is carefully removed by hand, the fields are irrigated prior to digging to ease and speed the harvesting process.
The turmeric rhizomes are subsequently cleaned, and "fingers" of turmeric are separated from mother rhizomes. "We work in collaboration with Agricultural University, Trichur, Kerala in India to identify the best sustainable farming procedures and the right turmeric variety," shares Benny Antony, PhD, Joint Managing Director- Arjuna.
Curcugreen™ traceability is from farm-to-shelf. Arjuna works with skilled farmers who can harvest the turmeric extract efficiently. The production process ensures the product is completely clean and safe for use, with zero contamination.
Arjuna has full supervision of Curcugreen™'s supply chain, from farm to finished supplement, to provide a pure, clean and safe product. recently received self-affirmed GRAS status for Curcugreen™ turmeric extract following a comprehensive review by a panel of qualified experts. The pure, high-potency ingredient is available for use in food and supplements.

Natural Shelf Life Extender for Chilled Meats
-
Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd presents a complete, natural formulation-specific preservative designed to increase chilled-meat product shelf-life and ensure food safety.
Synthetic preservatives commonly used in chilled meats contain nitrates. These can generate nitrosamines, chemical compounds suspected of increasing cancer risk. But nitrosomyoglobin, formed from myoglobin and nitric oxide during curing, is responsible for the red colour in cured meats associated with freshness. Some of the volatile nitrosamines formed during curing process with nitrates have mutagenic activity — a high price paid for controlling the growth of yeast and mould. The all-natural formulation from Arjuna can replace chemical nitrosomyoglobin-forming preservatives yet is non-carcinogenic and safe to use in chilled meat. It is highly potent and prevents the growth of yeast and mold in chilled meat products.
” We conducted a number of bench trials to measure how our formulation performs in chilled meat preservation,” says Benny Antony, PhD, Joint Managing Director for Arjuna. ”The excellent results encouraged us to offer this new, powerful natural preservative formulation to meat manufacturers. It's a new, clean way of preservation that also can help differentiate cured meat products in the marketplace..”
The biggest challenge in replacing synthetic preservatives involves flavour masking (blocking unwanted or undesired flavours) while creating the correct functional mix of natural ingredients to combat a range of microbial activities. The advanced formulation used in Arjuna’s preperation provides a natural solution for a variety of problems typically encountered in chilled meat products, such as: microbial spoilage, oxidative rancidity, short shelf life, off colour, and altered flavour. It retains natural colour and freshness, and extends chilled meat shelf life by up to 15 days.
“Today's meat industries are increasingly seeking more ready-to-use solutions that are tailored and natural, allowing for clean label products," notes Antony. "Our formulation is offered in both liquid and powder forms. It is a comprehensive, natural solution safeguarding taste, color, product safety, and increased shelf-life.
Arjuna's R&D team has also developed a range of natural preservatives that do not change the organoleptic properties of food and beverage products such as bread, yoghurt, cheese sausage, humus, mayonnaise and vegetable oils, fruit juices, and fruit pulp. The company's ingredient scientists combine herbal extracts used in traditional medicine with methods of fermentation for bacteriocins, in concert with advanced technologies, such as microencapsulation and emulsification. Arjuna’s natural meat preservatives address three major food trends: natural, clean label and food safety.

Arjuna Launches Natural Clean Label Shelf Life Extender
-
Kerala, India – Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd. launches its natural preservatives range that keeps food fresh and increases shelf life. The all natural formulation addresses three major food trends: natural, clean label and food safety. Arjuna opened a new food technology division at the company's Cochin R&D facilities in the south of India's Kerala State to serve food and beverage companies in addition to its established nutraceuticals clients. The company will launch the new line at Gulfood Manufacturing, Dubai, stand #S-B3. .
The new line consists of distinctive formulations of proprietary blends of essential oils and oleoresins. Arjuna's R&D team identified a unique selection of botanical extracts possessing antimicrobial activity and comprehensively tested them in multiple food and beverage applications. The sensory profiles indicated no change in taste or mouthfeel.
“Consumers' growing demand for food free from preservatives directly influence food manufacturers' and retailers' decisions in developing and marketing new products," says Benny Antony, PhD, Joint Managing Director for Arjuna. "Millennials, especially, are actively seeking safe foods without artificial ingredients. New product developers can help ensure success by focusing on clean labels. Consumers want natural, healthy products and our mission is to make it happen, and at the same time to guarantee food safety."
Arjuna's R&D team developed a range of natural preservatives that do not change the organoleptic properties of food and beverage products such as bread, yoghurt, cheese sausage, humus, mayonnaise and vegetable oils, fruit juices, and fruit pulp. The company’s ingredient scientists combine herbal extracts used in traditional medicine with methods of fermentation for bacteriocins, in concert with advanced technologies, such as microencapsulation and emulsification
“Consumers are not aware that a lot of fruit-based drinks are susceptible to oxidation and microbial degradation,” explains Antony. “Drinking fresh fruit and vegetable drinks, or enjoying healthful and nutritious snacks like hummus spread that are refrigerated without preservatives could be dangerous to health. These products are highly sensitive to oxidation and contamination. Many such products currently on the market rely on synthetic preservatives to protect them. ”
Arjuna’s natural antimicrobial system is made from a combination of natural antifungal and antibacterial components isolated from spices, herbs and bacteriocins. They are targeted specifically to address the spoilage issue in fresh foods and beverages, and improve shelf life naturally. Spices and herbs that are recognized as having proven antimicrobial properties are currently in demand in the food industry. Research has shown that combining select natural antimicrobials can have a synergistic effect, making them more effective than single components.

Arjuna's One-Shot, High Omega-3 Set to Launch
-
Kerala, India - Arjuna Natural Ltd., launches a high-concentrate -90% - omega-3 PUFA ingredient produces with latest technology for dietary supplements and functional foods and beverages at SupplySide West, Las Vegas, booth #MM179.
Innova Market Insights reports an increase in the use of omega-3 in brain health supplements in the US market. In 2015, 18% of brain health supplement launches tracked with omega-3 as an ingredient, while in 2011 only 6.9% of brain health supplement contained this ingredient. The company identified the Top 5 claims for omega-3 supplement launches tracked in Europe and the US and found Heart Health leads with 60%, and brain-mood health follows with 43%.
The main challenge in providing the daily intake of omega-3 is ensuring the consumer gets high enough content of the nutraceutical. The old solution was to take multiple capsules or a hard-to-swallow “horse pill”. But consumers demand convenience and, of course, smaller, easy-to-swallow soft capsules.
“A larger quantity of softgels or capsules can lead to over consumption and overdoses of unnecessary additives just to achieve your daily-recommended dose of omega-3 PUFAs,” says Benny Antony, PhD, Joint Managing Director for Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd. “We developed a high-concentrate omega-3 PUFA that enables daily intake in just one capsule or one liquid ‘shot’ per day.”
Addressing growing consumer and processor concerns about supplement purity, Antony adds that, “More than ever, product makers are seeking a clean, clear omega-3 that leaves them free from anxieties about contamination.”
Fish oil is among the most concentrated sources of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA.Omega-3s have been found to lower triglycerides and cholesterol levels, plus ameliorate or help prevent dozens of health concerns.
The majority of applications of omega-3 are in products targeting cardiovascular health. In fact, omega-3s are so beneficial in reducing triglyceride levels, they are approved by FDA as a drug for the treatment of high triglyceride levels.
While omega-3 fatty acids can be derived from various types of fish and other sources, sardines are particularly high in EPA and DHA, plus other nutrients found to support cardiovascular and other health issues.
“We examined a range of fish rich in omega-3 and selected a specific sardine type for our ingredient,” explains Antony. “With growing concern over the health of the seas, people are turning to sardines since they are at the bottom of the aquatic food chain, feeding solely on plankton. They have a shorter lifecycle than other fish, and accumulate fewer toxins during their lifecycle. Moreover, sardines live on the upper layer of the ocean, which is comparatively less polluted than the deeper waters. These characteristics reduce the chances of product contamination with ocean pollutants.”
“Consumers, especially millennials, want to know where their omega-3 come from—they are justifiably concerned about traceability and supply chain control,” adds Antony. “Arjuna ensures food safety and a pure, sustainable product via wild-caught sardines from the west coast of India, top safety procedures, plus a solar-powered system that provides 100% of the energy required to produce omega-3.”
Arjuna’s production processes and products meet market-specific regulations worldwide. A GMP-certified, SAP-driven company, Arjuna has achieved international certifications including ISO22000, Kosher and Halal. Arjuna continues to engage in research and development, with continuing scientific validation of its novel product line through advanced clinical studies.

Curcugreen™ is also undergoing two other human clinical trials in patients with Alzheimers disease and subjects at risk of developing Alzheimers disease in Australia under the pioneering researcher Prof Ralph Martins.
“The finding will open a new world of hope to the millions battling with Alzheimer’s every day, as they will now have a natural and safe alternative to controlling Alzheimer’s” says Dr. Benny Antony (Inventor of Curcugreen™), Joint Managing Director- Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd.

About Alzheimers
Worldwide, nearly 36 million people have Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. Only 1-in-4 people with Alzheimer’s disease have been diagnosed. Alzheimer’s and other dementias are the top cause for disabilities in later life. The cost of caring for Alzheimer’s patients in the U.S. is estimated to be $220 billion per year. The global cost of Alzheimer’s and dementia is estimated to be $605 billion, which is equivalent to 1% of the entire world’s gross domestic product. 1-in-9 Americans over 65 has Alzheimer’s disease. One third of Americans over age 85 are afflicted with the illness. 5.2 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. Unless a cure is found, more than 13 million Americans will have the disease by 2050. Typical life expectancy after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis is 4-to-8 years.
None of the treatments available today for Alzheimer’s disease slows or stops the malfunction and death of neurons in the brain that cause Alzheimer’s symptoms and eventually make the disease fatal. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have approved five medications to treat the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. These drugs work by increasing the amount of chemicals called neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters help nerve cells in the brain (neurons) communicate with each other. The effectiveness of these drugs varies from person to person. While these drugs help with symptoms, they do not treat the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s.
There is a great need of a drug which can modify the disease process itself by impacting one or more of the brain changes caused by Alzheimer’s, thus stop or slow the progress of the disease. The possible targets include lowering beta amyloid, lowering beta secretase, maintain Tau protein, control inflammation, reducing insulin resistance etc. Many researchers believe successful treatment will eventually involve a cocktail of medications aimed at several targets, similar to current treatments for many cancers and AIDS.

Kerala Agriculture University launches research project on Public-Private Partnership mode with Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd. - August 2014
-
The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has launched a project on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode. It has signed a memorandum of understanding with private sector Arjuna Natural Extracts Limited for a project, ‘Metabolome analysis in ginger and product development using gingerol’.
Industrial feasibility
KAU Vice Chancellor P. Rajendran said the project was intended to take research findings to the industry. “Ginger has been used from time immemorial for therapeutic use. The KAU has developed several ginger varieties having high gingerol content. Gingerol being a pharmacologically important component in ginger with anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, gastro-protective, cardiotonic and anti-hepatotoxic qualities, these KAU varieties are very useful in development of medicines with organic base,” he added.
T.R. Gopalakrishnan, Director of Research, said the project proposed under the PPP mode was funded by the Biotechnology Industry Research Council of the Union Department of Biotechnology. The project will be jointly implemented by the Centre for Plant Biotechnology and Molecular Biology of KAU and the Arjuna Natural Extracts Limited, an ISO 9001 and 22000 Company.
The duration of the project is expected to be three years. The total outlay was Rs.1.48 crore, he said.
Dr.Benny Antony, Founder Director, Arjuna Natural Extracts Limited, said that gingerol content was a vital parameter in production of ginger-based medicinal preparations, but its international market remained largely untapped because of the low gingerol content in traditional cultivars and poor gingerol stability issues.
“The novel ginger cultivars of KAU with high gingerol content will help commercialise quality guaranteed stable ginger extract by developing a ginger extract powder with at least 6 per cent gingerol content. The project will develop methods to increase the stability of gingerols in the product, identify and purify individual gingerols, and establish the safety of the standardised ginger extract. We had earlier collaborated with research institutions in the U.S, Japan and Australia,” he added.
‘Boon to farmers’
M.R. Shylaja, professor, who detected the industrial feasibility of new ginger varieties with high gingerol content developed by her, said this project would be a boon to ginger farmers as it would lead to ensuring buy-back guarantee at fair price.
E. K. Mathew, Registrar, Joy Mathew, Comptroller, E. V. Nybe, Academic Director, P. K. Valsalakumari, Associate Dean and P. A. Valsala spoke.
