Guggul is the gum resin from the tree Commiphora Mukul, a small thorny tree belonging to the same genus as myrrh and has similar components with comparable properties and activities. Guggul has been a key constituent in ancient Indian Ayurvedic system of medicine.

The Guggul plant can be found from Northern Africa to Central Asia, but is common in Northern India. It grows well in arid and semi-arid climate and tolerates poor soil. It is a shrub or tree which usually has a height of 4m. The branches of the plant are thorny and have simple leaves.



The resin has been used in Ayurvedic preparations for centuries to treat various ailments, including obesity, bone fractures, arthritis, inflammation, cardiovascular disease and lipid disorders.

Modern research has confirmed these properties of Guggul. The anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory activity of the gum was demonstrated as early as 1960. Animal and human studies confirmed its positive effect on hypo-cholesterolemia
